High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell (9 January) had a phone call with United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the current developments in the Middle East and Libya.

The High Representative informed Secretary of State Pompeo that the EU will be holding an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council for tomorrow (10 January) to discuss with the 28 EU Foreign Ministers the situation in Iraq and Libya and to agree on further EU engagement.

On Iraq, the High Representative and the Secretary of State discussed the importance of staying actively engaged for peace and stability in the region.

Josep Borrell underlined that the situation in Libya remains a priority for the European Union and that an immediate cessation of hostilities and a sustainable ceasefire on the ground would be crucial for regional and European security.

The High Representative and the Secretary of State agreed to stay in close contact.
