Today (24 January) from 15h30 to 15h50 CET, join President von der Leyen for a chat with German astronaut Matthias Maurer who is on-board the International Space Station (ISS). Matthias Maurer will answer the questions sent with the hashtag #SpaceChat, from the impact of climate change seen from space to advice to aspiring astronauts. President von der Leyen will talk about some of the upcoming important EU space policy initiatives in this chat moderated by French YouTuber Gaspard G. Follow live on EbS, on Instagram, via @europeancommission and @vonderleyen and on LinkedIn via Ursula von der Leyen. In December 2020, German astronaut Matthias Maurer was assigned to his first International Space Station mission known as ‘Cosmic Kiss'. He is the second European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut to fly under NASA's Commercial Crew Programme, as part of SpaceX Crew-3. #SpaceChat takes place shortly before the European Commission presents its new space package, in February. It will have two main objectives. First, providing reliable, secure and cost-effective connectivity for communications and high-speed broadband throughout Europe. Second, making space a safe environment by developing an efficient and united approach to space traffic management. You can find more information on EU Space Policy here.
