At an awards ceremony, the Commission announced the winners of the 2024 Megalizzi–Niedzielski prize for aspiring journalists: Magna Araújo Amorim (Portugal), Neža Borkovič (Slovenia) and Sigrid Hallqvist (Sweden). The Commission awarded the prizes to Magna, Neža, and Sigrid for their journalistic talent, dedication to quality journalism, and strong attachment to EU values.

Cohesion and Reforms Commissioner Elisa Ferreira (pictured) said: “These talented journalists have immense potential and are passionate about upholding our EU values. A free and independent press is essential for our democracies, which is why it's crucial to continue supporting journalists in their mission to provide high-quality information to Europeans. This commitment is reflected in our latest call for proposals — we're not just talking the talk but implementing concrete actions.”

During the awards ceremony, the Commission launched the 8th call for proposals to support media activities designed to raise awareness about Cohesion Policy. With an overall budget of €3.5 million, this latest call invites media outlets, universities, and both private and public entities to submit proposals for editorially independent content. The deadline for applications is 17:00 CET, 7 January 2025. Examples of communication actions of previous beneficiaries can be found on this webpage.

Launched in 2019, the Megalizzi–Niedzielski prize for aspiring journalists pays tribute to the memory of Antonio Megalizzi and Bartek Piotr Orent-Niedzielski, two European journalists deeply committed to the EU and its values. Both tragically lost their lives following a terrorist attack in Strasbourg in late 2018.
