European Innovation Council to invest €1.4 billion in deep tech and strategic technology expansion in 2025
The European Innovation Council (EIC), part of the EU's research and innovation programme Horizon Europe, will support European deep tech research and high-potential start-ups with €1.4 billion next year.
The EIC's 2025 work programme, adopted by the Commission today, represents an increase of almost €200 million compared to 2024.
Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Commissioner Iliana Ivanova (pictured) said: "The European Innovation Council has emerged as a key player in the EU's support for radical innovation. In 2025, the EIC will boost EU deep tech with even greater resources, amounting to €1.4bn from Horizon Europe, our research and innovation programme. Targeted support, in particular through the ‘STEP’ call for initiatives, will help to close critical funding gaps and build a stronger and more resilient innovation ecosystem in Europe.”
As well as a larger budget, the 2025 work programme brings several improvements, including better access to equity funding by expanding with the EIC Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) expansion facility, introduced following the STEP Regulation. Further improvements, based on the EIC Committee’s recommendations, are also included.
