#China - Borrell says the National Security Law in #HongKong was more draconian than anticipated
EU foreign ministers will discuss Hong Kong at today’s (13 July) Foreign Affairs Council. On 30 June, the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress adopted the National Security Law in Hong Kong. The European Union has reiterated its grave concerns about this law which was adopted without prior consultation of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council and civil society. The European Union has always supported the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and called for the preservation of Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy, in line with the Basic Law and with international commitments. The EU High Representative Josep Borrell said that the law passed was more draconian than expected and member states will raise their concerns. Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Ann Linde said that she would be supporting a series of measures proposed by Germany and France.
