#SOTEU - Von der Leyen calls for a ‘new transatlantic agenda’ #US
In today’s (16 September) ‘State of the European Union’ address to the European Parliament, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen called for a renewal in Europe’s relationship with its friends and allies, especially the United States.
She admitted that though the EU might not always agree with recent decisions taken by the current White House, the EU will always treasure the transatlantic alliance based on shared values and history.
Referring to this year’s presidential elections in the United States, she said that whatever may happen the EU would be ready to build a new transatlantic agenda to strengthen bilateral partnership, ‘be it on trade or to tackle taxation’.
Von der Leyen also called for joint approach to reforming the international system that the US and Europe were largely responsible for building.
