Taiwan hosts press event at Brussels Holiday Fair
On 6 February, the opening day of the Brussels International Holiday Fair, the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium organized a press event at the Taiwan Booth, welcoming some 70 journalists who were interested in Taiwan’s touristic potential.
The press representatives were able to enjoy a buffet, featuring the finest of Taiwan’s cuisine, while they were being briefed by staff of the Representative Office on the opportunities Taiwan can offer to visitors. The ROC Representative to the EU and Belgium, Kuoyu Tung, was also present and spoke to the group. He said: “The Taiwan Cycling Festival, held annually in November, has been a big attraction to Europeans.”
The gathered journalists also sampled some of Taiwan’s High Mountain tea, as well as the award-winning Kavalan whisky. After the event, the Taiwan booth was reopened to the general public, while the varied and animated programme continued.
Taiwan violin virtuoso performs in Brussels
On Friday 7 February, Taiwanese-Australian violinist Ray Chen (pictured) performed in the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts (Bozar), together with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the Swiss conductor Michel Tabachnik. Born in Taipei in 1989, Chen began learning violin at the age of four.
After his family moved to Australia he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music aged 15. At 20, he won both the First Prize and the Audience Prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition.
His impeccable technique, musical feeling and audacious interpretations are his calling card, which also ensure him the warm support of the public. During the sold-out concert in Brussels, Chen performed the Violin Concerto in E minor by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
