In this complex context, the impact on children is manifold. Children face direct risks of exposure to the Ebola virus, as well as secondary risks as a result of the loss of infected caregivers and family members, such as loss of access to routine health care, vaccination, and education.

There are already 3,700 children now orphaned because of Ebola and need to be cared for.

UNICEF response

From the onset, UNICEF has been on the frontlines in the Ebola-affected countries in some of the most vulnerable communities. This includes supporting national response plans to contain and control the spread of disease through communication and social mobilization efforts, delivery of critical supplies at a massive scale for use in treatment and care centers and for continuity of basic services, and contributing to water and sanitation efforts.
