DSC_0212On 7 October, the Taipei Representative Office (TRO) in the EU and Belgium hosted a reception at the Concert Noble in Brussels, celebrating the 103rd anniversary of the Republic of China. More than 500 guests attended, including the President of the European Parliament-Taiwan Friendship Group Sir Charles Tannock, Belgian Minister of State Mark Eyskens, and Deputy Speaker of the Belgian Federal House of Representatives Peter Luykx. Representative Kuo-yu Tung of the TRO said that this year an innovative decision has been made to replace the standard speeches with a musical performance and an exhibition of cultural artifacts from Taiwan, on loan from the Franz Collection.

This was a symbolic gesture of culture replacing words, which in turn gave people the opportunity to discover more about Taiwan’s cultural popularity. The musical performance was given by Taiwanese marimba player Chin-cheng Lin. His music blended notes of European culture with the oriental nature of the marimba perfectly. Furthermore, 20 delicate porcelain artefacts by the internationally renowned ‘Franz Collection’ were on display. While the exhibit included a porcelain series inspired by Van Gogh, the main piece was based on the famous artifact, ‘Jadeite Cabbage’ from the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The guests also had the opportunity to view a display commemorating the occasion of the 100th edition of the "Taiwan Newsletter".
