Moldova is the latest country seeking closer ties with the EU. Today (13 November) MEPs voted on an association agreement with the country, paving the way for more trade and closer co-operation. Andi Cristea, a Romanian member of the S&D group who are the new head of the European Parliament’s delegation for Moldova, speaks about how closer ties will benefit the eastern European country as well as the EU.What is the importance of the association agreement and closer ties for Moldova and the EU?
A European future for Moldova is the best way to guarantee prosperity and democracy in the country. For the EU, economic and political integration is a way to unite people, society and countries. The European Parliament thinks that stronger political and economic ties between Moldova and the EU will lead to advantages on both sides. How will it help to promote good governance and human rights in Moldova? The agreement includes clear steps and a well-defined framework with the priorities and benchmarks for 2014-2016.There are three major priorities: implementing European values and principles (democracy, the rule of law and the market economy); making improvements in the field of justice, freedom and security, including data protection and fighting corruption; and cooperating more closely on reforming public administration.
How should we deal with Russia when pursuing closer ties with countries on our eastern border?
The association agreements with Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine are positive agreements; they offer a framework for cooperation and promotion of European values. A more stable, secure and prosperous Moldova would also benefit the Russian producers and investors. However, the Russian Federation remains an important actor. We need to keep all communication channels with Russia open, while remaining firm.
