Malaga and Gothenburg will hold the title of the European capitals of smart tourism in 2020. The official award ceremony took place at the occasion of the European tourism forum on 9 October 2019 in Helsinki, Finland.

European capital of smart tourism winners 2020

The European capital of smart tourism is a preparatory action proposed by the European Parliament and implemented by the European Commission. It aims to raise the profile of Europe as a smart tourism destination and to set up a platform to share tourism best practices among European cities.

The initiative focuses on strengthening tourism generated innovative development in EU cities and their surroundings. 35 Cities from 17 EU countries competed for the title but both Malaga and Gothenburg stood out for their innovative tourism measures in all four categories of the competition, as well as the impressive programme of activities and their suitability to act as role models for other burgeoning smart tourism destinations during 2020. The 7-member jury, comprising representatives from the European Commission, European Parliament, European Committee of Regions and the EU countries: Finland and France (EU countries of the previous Capitals 2019 - Helsinki and Lyon), decided upon the 2 European Capitals of Smart Tourism 2020.

In addition, four cities were recognized with the 2020 European smart tourism awards for their outstanding achievements in the four categories of the competition. These four cities received the highest scores in individual categories among all 35 applicant cities during the preselection phase done by the independent experts.

  • 2020 European smart tourism award in sustainability - Gothenburg (Sweden)
  • 2020 European smart tourism award in digitalisation - Ljubljana (Slovenia)
  • 2020 European smart tourism award in cultural heritage & creativity - Karlsruhe (Germany)
