Coming up in Parliament: Afghanistan, rule of law and EU own resources
MEPs will discuss the situation in Afghanistan, the state of the rule of law in the EU as well as the delay in proposals for new sources of revenue for the EU, EU affairs.
On Wednesday (1 September), the day after US troops withdraw from Afghanistan, the foreign affairs and development committees as well as Parliament's delegation for relations with Afghanistan will assess the growing tensions following the attacks at Kabul’s airport that killed dozens of people who were trying to flee the country following the Taliban’s return to power.
Also on Wednesday, the civil liberties committee will discuss the state of the rule of law in EU countries with Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders. They will also analyze whether Poland and Hungary are moving towards complying with European values in response to ongoing Article 7 procedures launched by the European Commission in 2017 for Poland and 2018 for Hungary.
The budgets committee will question Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn today (31 August) about the delay in proposals for a digital levy and a carbon border adjustment mechanism, meant to equip the EU with new own revenue sources.
