Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has violated the constitution of the country
Тhe Bulgarian Constitutional Court has ruled President Rumen Radev (pictured) violated the Constitution. When appointing caretaker government in May this year, Radev appointed Kiril Petkov as Minister of Economy, who at that time had dual citizenship - Bulgarian and Canadian. This is explicitly prohibited by the Constitution of Bulgaria. When holding senior government positions, each nominee fills in a declaration guaranteeing that he meets the conditions for the respective position. According to the Constitutional Court of Bulgaria, Kiril Petkov filled out a declaration with false content and was fully aware that at the time of taking office, he still had both Canadian and Bulgarian citizenship. According to the Criminal Code of the country drawing up a document with false content is punishable as a criminal offence.
However, according to analysts the more scandalous in this case is that the pro-Russian President Rumen Radev also knew that he was appointing a person who violated the Constitution as a minister. Radev himself again defended Kiril Petkov yesterday in a scandalous statement to the media, trying to depreciate the constitutional texts, calling them “obsolete”. Radev even said that Bulgaria would be a better place if there were more ministers like Kiril Petkov. The comment of the head of state provoked strong negative reactions among the legal community in Bulgaria, according to which Radev, who is currently a candidate for a second presidential term, inadmissibly continues to violate the most important law of the state. Many public figures in Sofia have demanded the impeachment proceedings against the pro-Russian president-general. This could happen earliest in a month, when we expect the new Bulgarian parliament to be elected and constituted. At the same time, the main opposition political leader in the country, three-time pro-European Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, called on Radev not to be turned into a martyr and a victim. According to Borissov, the real impeachment against the violator of the Constitution will come from the Bulgarian people, who will vote against Radev on 14 November at the presidential election.
