The Commission approved the addition of ‘Gula Kelapa Kulonprogo Jogja' (pictured) to the register of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

'Gula Kelapa Kulonprogo Jogja' is a granulated coconut sugar from the Kulonprogo Regency in Indonesia, on the island of Java. Made from the sap of local green and red coconut varieties, it has a distinctive aroma of strong coconut, with smoky and caramel notes. Its brownish-yellow hue and smooth texture are the result of traditional local processing methods, which include meticulous steps such as land preparation, plant cultivation, sap tapping, fermentation, and granulation. These traditions are passed from generation to generation.

This new denomination will be added to the list of 3,652 products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes.
