‘A tragedy for Europe, Ukraine and Russia itself’ Nauseda
Arriving at this evening’s special European Council on Ukraine Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called the sanctions so far were not decisive enough. He called today’s invasion a tragedy for Europe, Ukraine and Russia itself.
“I believe, still believe, in the potential role of the European Union in preventing such actions in the middle of Europe,” he said. “But for this we need to take actions we can discuss and discussions are useful, but we cannot be forever in the discussions, we can take decisions and we are able to take decisions.”
Nauseda called for a new and wide ranging sanctions coverning economic, financial, social and political measures. He also called for candidate status for Ukraine with a perspective on joining the European Union, but added that action is needed today, because tomorrow might be too late.
Belarus
“We have to talk about the sanctions targeted at Belarus because this country is participating actively in these military actions and doing so against its neighbour Ukraine. This is terrible, this is horrible.”
