'Russian Salad' on the menu at NATO summit cafe in Madrid raises eyebrows
A menu for the NATO summit media center restaurant in Madrid, Spain shows a Russian salad. It was seen on 28 June, 2022.
International journalists and officials were puzzled to see "Russian Salad", the top-of-the-line menu at the hotel's restaurant.
It is a common staple in Spanish restaurants, but its inclusion on the menu was a cause for concern ahead of the summit at which Russia will be labeled a security threat under the new strategic alliance concept. This is due to its invasion of Ukraine.
"Russian salad at NATO summit?" "I'm a little shocked by that choice," journalist Inaki Lopez said to Spanish media outlet La Sexta.
The dish's high carbohydrate content seemed to outweigh its doubtable name, and it was reportedly sold out in hours.
Diplomats were more thoughtful about the Tuesday evening banquet held at the Baroque Santa Cruz Palace, Central Madrid.
Jose Andres, a Spanish chef who coordinates the meal in Chef's Table on Netflix, serves the traditional tapa with "tomato dumplings" and renames it "Ukrainian Salad" like he does in his restaurants throughout Spain.
