Russian-held Popasna in Ukraine is a ghost town after end of siege
Popasna, an eastern Ukrainian town that was once home to 20,000 people, has become a ghost town with very little life.
After Russian forces launched an offensive on the eastern flank of Ukraine, with heavy shelling and intense attacks around the Luhansk area town of Popasna, Ukrainian troops fled Popasna in May.
A Reuters reporter visited Popasna Thursday to see the abandoned town. Nearly all of the apartment buildings were either severely damaged or destroyed. Barren streets were devoid of any signs of life or animals.
Vladimir Odarchenko, a former resident, stood in his destroyed home and looked at the debris on the floor.
"I don't know what I'm going do." Where should I live? He told Reuters that he didn't know. "Summer is fine. I can rent a small apartment if I have enough money."
Russia continues to attack eastern Ukraine to take control of the Donbas. Moscow captured Luhansk, a part of the Donbas region, earlier this month.
Russia launched its "special military operations" against Ukraine on 24 February, which, according to the West, was an unprovoked war.
According to the United Nations, the conflict has decimated cities in Ukraine and forced 5.2 million people from the country to flee.
