President Tsai meets European Parliament delegation in Taipei

President Tsai Ing-wen reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Europe, 4 November, as she welcomed a visiting delegation of seven Members of the European Parliament at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The visit, which is led by French MEP Raphael Glucksmann, chair of the EP Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE), is the first of its kind to visit Taiwan from the European Parliament and aims to learn from the country’s efforts to counter disinformation and defend democracy.

In her remarks the following day, President Tsai thanked the European lawmakers for their meaningful support and stated her hope of developing a democratic alliance against disinformation. In a corresponding speech delivered at the Presidential Office, MEP Glucksmann expressed his solidarity with Taiwan, stating that the group had come with a very simple, very clear message: You are not alone; Europe is standing with you. The Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium also expressed its thanks to the European lawmakers, describing the visit as marking a significant milestone in the relations between Taiwan and the European Parliament.
