Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra raises $900,000 for military by auctioning Eurovision trophy
Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra won the Eurovision Song Contest earlier in the month. The contest's trophy was sold to raise $900,000.
The entry Stefania won Eurovision. It was a strong performance that triggered a wave of support and helped to win an emotional victory. This victory was also welcomed by the president of Ukraine.
They sold the crystal microphone that they received in a Facebook auction, which was led by Serhiy Prytula, a Ukrainian TV presenter.
The fourth month of Russia's invasion of Ukraine has already claimed thousands of lives and sent millions fleeing their cities to rubble.
Moscow describes its actions as a "special military operations" that aims to disarm Ukraine and defend it from fascists. The West and Ukraine both claim that the fascist allegation was baseless and that it is an unprovoked attack of aggression.
As they held off Russian attempts at capturing Sievierodonetsk (the largest city Ukraine controls in the eastern region, Luhansk), Ukrainian forces were subject to heavy artillery bombardments over the weekend.
