After Russia's attack against Ukraine in the Donbas, Ukraine 13 July, 2022, smoke rises from the frontline.

Two Americans died in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region, a spokesperson for the US State Department said Saturday (23 July) without giving further details.

According to a spokesperson for the State Department, the U.S. administration was in contact with the loved ones of the deceased and provided "all possible consular aid."

The spokesperson refused to give details about the circumstances or how recent they were.

"Out of respect for the families during these difficult times, we have no further," stated the spokesperson. He was verifying an earlier CNN report.

Russia has held Ukraine hostage for five months. Moscow calls it a "special military operations" to disarm Ukraine, and expel anti-Russian nationalism that was fomented by the West. The West and Kyiv both claim that Russia launched an unprovoked military intervention.

Many Americans have offered to fight alongside Ukrainian forces, despite being warned not to. In May, a US citizen was killed fighting alongside thousands of foreign fighters to defend Ukraine from Russian forces.
