Zelenskiy calls for global peace summit in video message
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zeleskiy proposed a global summit on peace this winter. This was in a video message Kyiv hoped would be broadcast before the final of the soccer World Cup in Qatar. However, it seemed unlikely FIFA would permit the move.
CNN reported that Zelenskiy asked FIFA, the world soccer's governing body, to allow him to share a message for peace before the final.
"We offered Peace Formula the world. It was fair. It was offered because there are no winners in war. There can be no draw," Zelenskiy said in a video message from his office.
In February, Russia invaded Ukraine as part of a "special military operations". Conflicts like this have left thousands dead and millions homeless.
"I am pleased to announce that I will be holding a Global Peace Formula Summit in the winter. This summit will unite all nations around the cause for global peace. He said that the stands of stadiums become empty after a match and that the war-torn cities are empty afterwards."
CNN reported that Zelenskiy wanted to appear via videolink before Argentina's final against France at Doha’s Lusail Stadium. This was in preparation for an audience of hundreds of million, and CNN confirmed this.
FIFA didn't respond to repeated requests for comment. However, it seemed unlikely that Zelenskiy would be given a platform due to its stance regarding political messages at the World Cup.
Mykhailo Podolyak, a Ukrainian presidential aide, said on Twitter that FIFA shows a lack understanding of the disaster the Russian federation is dragging humanity into by starting a conflict in Ukraine.
Russia launched more than 70 missiles against Ukraine Friday in its largest bombardment since the beginning of the war. This knocked out power in the country's second-largest city, and forced Kyiv into emergency blackouts across the country.
