Italy's Meloni reaffirms support for Ukraine in call with Zelenskiy
Giorgia Meloni (pictured), the Italian prime minister, reiterated on Tuesday (27 December) her government's support for Ukraine during a phone call with President Volodymyr Zeleskiy, her office said.
Meloni, who was elected to office in October 2017, has been a strong supporter of Kyiv despite the friction within her rightist ruling coalition, and split public opinion.
Her office stated that Meloni had renewed the Italian government’s support for Kyiv in all areas, including the military, political, and humanitarian. "Meloni also (reaffirmed) the Italian government’s complete support for Kyiv in order to repair energy infrastructure, and (to work for the future reconstruction of Ukraine."
Zelenskiy, in a tweet posted Tuesday morning, thanked Meloni and stated that Italy was looking into providing air defense systems to Kyiv.
In his address to a group of Western leaders last week, the Ukrainian leader demanded a broad range of weapons and air defense systems to aid efforts against the Russian invasion.
Interview with Reuters: Guido Crosetto, the Italian defence minister, confirmed that Kyiv had asked for air defense systems from Rome, which included the Franco-Italian AMP/T system.
The previous government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi sent five aid packages including military supplies to Kyiv. Meloni's government is currently working on a sixth delivery.
Meloni's office confirmed Tuesday that she had "confirmed her intent" to visit Kyiv. Zelenskiy was invited by the office to Rome - he visited the USA last week in his first overseas trip after Russia invaded on 24 February.
