With an additional €30 million, the European Commission promises immediate support for #Lebanon
As part of the international conference on aid and support for Beirut and the Lebanese people, organized by the French government and the United Nations, the European Commission has pledged new funding of €30 million to meet the needs the most pressing of those affected by the deadly explosion of 4 August in Beirut. This sum comes on top of the €33m already announced by President von der Leyen, during their telephone conversation on Thursday (6 August).
Representing the European Commission at the conference, Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič said: "By mobilizing hundreds of search and rescue experts and sending medical aid to Beirut, the EU has helped the Lebanon the day after the explosion. I would like to thank the solidarity of all European countries participating in the response. As needs increase, we are providing humanitarian assistance to hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable. In these critical times, the EU is providing shelter, emergency health care, water and sanitation facilities, as well as food aid. We are determined to support the Lebanese people, both today and in the long term, to help them recover. The new EU humanitarian funding will be channeled through UN agencies, NGOs and international organizations. It will be subject to strict control."
