In a statement this afternoon (16 November), President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Commission has reached a new agreement to secure access to another COVID-19 vaccine.

The contract is with CureVac, one of the first companies to emerge with a possible messenger RNA based vaccine. The contract with CureVac allows the Commission to buy up to 405 million doses of the vaccine.

Earlier this year, the European Commission intervened with the support of the European Investment Bank to help CureVac in developing its vaccine. Von der Leyen says that the company made tangible progress.

Von der Leyen, also used the opportunity to say that further to exploratory talks with Moderna, who recently announced that they had achieved 94% efficacy with their mRNA-based vaccine, the European Commission hopes to finalize a contract.

The President of the European Commission added that all vaccines were subject to authorisation by the European Medicines Agency following a robust assessment.
