About 25000 Ukrainian refugees have reached Spain so far, says minister

- Around 25,000 Ukrainians have arrived toSpain since Russia invaded on February 24, but only 9,000 have registered with authorities so far, Jose Luis Escriva, Spanish Migration Minister, said Monday.

According to the United Nations refugee agency, nearly 3.5 million Ukrainians have fled their country. More than 2 million of them are now in Poland. Large numbers of refugees are also hosted in Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

Escriva stated that many of the Ukrainians arriving in Spain are staying with family or friends, and have not yet informed authorities.

Escriva stated that the granting residence permits has been expanded to include all those who were in Ukraine during the invasion.

Escriva stated that he expected around 9,000 additional refugees to register with Spanish authorities and receive temporary protection orders from the European Union, allowing them to obtain residence and work permits immediately in the country.

Ukrainians are allowed to enter the EU freely without a visa, but they must have residency permits in order to stay.
