TUI, the holiday group, expects the highest demand for Greece this year, according to its Director of Communications Aage duenhaupt, who spoke to Athens' news agency on Sunday (10 July).
About 20% of Greece's gross national product is made up by tourism. It has played a critical role in helping the economy recover from the decade-long debt crisis that followed the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Greece is once again this summer one the most sought-after holiday destinations." Duenhaupt stated that we expect the highest demand to date.
"The group is expected bring in around 3 million tourists to Greece. He added that this is a higher number than the 2.8 million who visited Greece before the pandemic.
TUI (TUIGn.DE) has stated that it expects to be profitable again in 2022, as countries have lifted restrictions.
Officials in Greece have stated that they expect the sector will bring in 80% of a record €18 billion ($18.33bn) in revenues in 2019, prior to the pandemic. This is based on 33 million visits, as opposed to the 14 million from abroad.
However, they could be affected by strikes or staff shortages that have caused thousands of cancellations across Europe.
