The Brussels Press Club is pleased to invite you to a hybrid conference and discussion concerning the Russian invasion of Ukraine’s impact on, and the future of, international food security. This event will be held at the Brussels Press Club, 94 rue Froissart, Brussels at 11:00AM, August 30, 2022.

This conference takes place as the shaky Agreement between Russia and Ukraine, achieved through Turkish and UN mediation, appears to be holding. The Agreement allows for grain exports in the Black Sea to resume.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February this year, sanctions levied against Russia have politically, economically, and militarily hamstrung it. Unfortunately, these sanctions combined with the security situation in the Black Sea and the realities of war between two major food and fertiliser producers have created an array of food security issues for the international community.

The ripple effects of rising food insecurity: a lack of foodstuffs, supply chain bottlenecks, increasing refugee flows, and political instability are being experienced across the globe on a scale not seen since the end of the Cold War, particularly in the Global South.

The challenges and opportunities for the world to deal with these issues are paramount. If the international community can only answer blatant aggression by inadvertently causing malnourishment in vulnerable areas of the globe, the international system may unravel in unpredictable ways.

The panel will discuss how we construct and maintain an effective sanctions regime capable of not only checking Russian aggression but ensuring the masses of the global south, who have the least to do with this situation, do not unduly bear the burdens.

The briefing will be held at the Brussels Press Club, 94 rue Froissart at 11.00AM Tuesday 30 August. The speakers shall be:-
