S&D Group on Ukraine: 'Give peace a chance'
The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcomed the latest news from Kiev and Moscow which suggests that both sides are attempting to find a political solution to the conflict.
S&D MEP and Vice President for Foreign Affairs Knut Fleckenstein said: "We take note of the peace plans put forward by Presidents Putin and Poroshenko and we hope that common ground can be found to pave the way for a comprehensive political solution to the Ukrainian crisis, based on respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.
"We invite all parties involved in this crisis to negotiate in good faith. Meanwhile, we call on the Council of the EU to take a final decision on further sanctions against the Russian Federation only after thoroughly evaluating the progress towards the political solution. The peace plan should be given a chance.
"We welcome the president of France's decision to put on hold the delivery of a helicopter carrier to Russia. This is a timely and responsible decision which will contribute to the peace and stability in the region."
