Pittella: 'Charlemagne prize to Schulz demonstrates his commitment to Europe'
Following the awarding of the prestigious Charlemagne prize to European Parliament President Martin Schulz, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats Group, Gianni Pittella, said: “This is a great day for Europe! The decision to award the prestigious Charlemagne Prize to Martin Schulz is an acknowledgement of the authoritative, obstinate and passionate work that the president of the European Parliament has undertaken in recent years to strengthen, more than ever before, the role of the European citizens’ forum.
“It is also a testament to the crucial function that the Parliament has managed to secure for itself despite the profound democratic crisis that we have gone through, and are partly still going through.
“The S&D Group, of which Martin is a member, rejoices together with him and is ready to face the new and exciting challenges that we have ahead of us: chiefly, overcoming the mistrust of citizens and providing the responses they deserve, thus continuing the work done in recent months in terms of boosting growth and employment, combating terrorism and launching a truly European asylum and immigration policy.”
