IRU Projects to help improve animal transport conditions
IRU Projects has embarked on new joint project with 15 partners to develop guidelines ensuring well-being of different animal species during transport.
Together with 15 partners from the transport industry sector and animal welfare, IRU Projects launched a new project on 27 May to develop best practice guidelines for the transport of different animal species, including cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and horses. Like humans, animals are entitled to proper conditions when travelling and need to be respected, says IRU.
The three-year project is designed to learn and improve on animal transport, harmonize transport times, rest periods, penalties and rules, as well as developing and sharing practical plans put together by key stakeholders. It will focus on road transport and short sea journeys within the EU.
Marc Billiet, IRU Head of EU Goods Transport, said, “The IRU very much welcomes the opportunity to support the work of this project, which provides an invaluable opportunity to showcase the best practices in use today by transport operators in different countries.”
