“The Council is back on track in fighting unfair trade practices by third countries. Crucially, the new methodology stands on a solid legal basis and is fully compatible with WTO law,” said Daniel Caspary MEP, EPP Group Spokesman in the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee, commenting on an agreement by the Foreign Affairs Council on Trade on a new, country-neutral anti-dumping methodology.

The new methodology will help to ensure that imported products are sold at a fair and equitable price in the EU. The position is a guideline for member states in the ongoing exchange with the European Commission and the European Parliament. Once the latter approves the position, all efforts will be directed towards reaching an agreement on the final text. The new Regulation shall enter into force by the end of the year.

"The EPP Group insists that the European Parliament must be quick on its feet to enable the EU to act quickly in defence of European jobs. This is good news for the hundreds of thousands of workers in the European steel industry. This would not have been possible without the solid work of Parliament's Rapporteur Salvatore Cicu," Caspary added. Now, the European Parliament has to finalize its own negotiating position as soon as possible.

According to the guidelines of the member states, the new methodology shall apply equally to all members of the WTO and to imports from those countries where markets are distorted or where states have a strong influence on the economy.
