On 20 March, the EU hosted in Brussels the Donors' Conference for the Gaza Desalination Central Station Project and associated work. The conference, co-chaired by the EU and the Palestinian Authority, mobilized €456 million in financial support for the largest infrastructure project in the Gaza Strip. The objective of the project is to provide a minimum of 55 million cubic metres of drinking water per year to people in urgent need of water supply.
European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner Johannes Hahn said: "This project addresses the most urgent needs in Gaza by providing clean water while contributing to economic growth, sustainability I am proud that the EU has committed €70m for the desalination plant and €7.1m for the management costs. Today's donors allow us to take another step towards the realization of this project, to improve living conditions and economic development in Gaza. "
