Bookings via online platforms rise by 28.3% in Q1 2024
During the first quarter of 2024, guests spent 123.7 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU, booked via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. This corresponds to an increase of 28.3% compared with the same period in 2023.
Platform tourism continued to set new monthly record values: in January 2024, 33.3 million nights were spent in accommodation booked via online platforms, showing an increase of 16.7% compared with January 2023. February registered 41.2 million nights booked via platforms (+19.0% compared with February 2023) and in March, the figure was 49.2 million (a sharp increase of +48.0%).

This information comes from monthly data on short-stay accommodation offered via online platforms for the first quarter of 2024 at the national level, published by Eurostat today. In addition, regional data for the fourth quarter of 2023 are also being released. These data are collected from four private collaborative economy platforms as part of an agreement with the European Commission reached in March 2020. Regional data are released one quarter later than the national data, in accordance with the rules set out in the agreement.

Regions in Spain, Croatia and France lead in 2023
The most popular regions for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms in 2023 were Andalucía in Spain (35.6 million nights), Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (32.6 million) and the French region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (24.9 million).
In the top 20 regions, 6 are in Spain and France, 5 in Italy, 2 regions are in Portugal and 1 in Croatia.
