Italian police seize Rubens masterpiece after fraud investigation
Italian police claimed on Friday (30 December) that they had seized a painting displayed by Peter Paul Rubens (17th century Flemish master), following a fraud investigation into its owner.
The The resurrected Christ seems to his mother masterpiece was part of a "Rubens In Genoa" exhibit at the Doge's Palace in Genoa. The police have not accused the exhibition of any wrongdoing.
The oil painting was almost 2m high and 1.5m wide. It cost €4 million ($4.27million).
Genoa police stated that they believed the Italian owners of the vehicle, who were not identified, used fake documents to send it overseas as part of an attempt to increase its market price.
They also set up foreign companies to pretend to have sold the painting. It shows Jesus greeting his mother with an unknown third-woman between them.
Although this third figure was missing from an earlier Rubens version, there is no indication that it is fake.
