Launch of MyVote2014.eu: European Union politics for the app generation
The first ever 'voting calculator' for the European Parliament elections based on MEPs’ actual voting records - rather than campaign promises - will be launched today in Brussels.
MyVote2014.eu is an initiative of VoteWatch Europe, the independent organisation which monitors the voting records of the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers, in partnership with the European Youth Forum/League of Young Voters. Users can cast their vote on major issues such as nuclear energy, tax, maternity leave and immigration and see instantly which MEPs and political parties match their own preferences most closely.
Targeted at 18–35-year-olds, MyVote2014.eu makes European politics fast, fun and easy. In just 60 seconds users can vote on 15 key issues covering four years of voting by MEPs since the last elections, using the website, mobile and Facebook apps, or the special website widget. MyVote2014.eu is available in English, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish. In addition to finding a political match, MyVote2014.eu:
- Shows how all MEPS and political parties voted on all 15 issues;
- explains each issue – and arguments for and against - in everyday language;
- shows how users’ votes could change EU policies, and;
- tests users’ knowledge of the European Parliament through a fun game.
VoteWatch Europe Policy Director Doru Frantescu said: “we want to show young people that MEPs don't all vote the same way. On many issues there are big differences between the different political parties represented in the European Parliament, so it matters who you support in next year's elections. MyVote2014 helps them understand where MEPs stand on 15 key issues, to help them make up their mind who to vote for."
European Youth Forum President Peter Matjašič said: "In light of the economic crisis, next European elections are more important than ever. Young people need to know that their participation in the next elections is essential in building a better future. This new tool developed by VoteWatch in the framework of the League of Young Voters will help them to understand the role of the European Parliament. Together with the other tools of the League of Young Voters, it will enable young people across the EU to vote in an informed way and take part in discussions on the issues that affect them".
