Yesterday (7 February), Mr Michel Barnier, Chief  Brexit Negotiator chaired a meeting on the EU’s Article 50 negotiations with the United Kingdom.

The meeting included senior officials from the EU27 Member States, the European Parliament and the Secretariat of the Council of the EU. The aim of the meeting was to create a common understanding of the key issues that need to be included in an orderly withdrawal agreement. The seminar focused on issues surrounding the UK's financial settlement and citizens' rights.

Speculation on the final settlement amount range from EUR 30 - 60 billion. The Commission would not confirm any figures, but said the amount would be based on objective and verifiable data. The Commission spokesperson said that the UK had made financial commitments and that these should be honoured in full, if not paid then the other 27 states will have to pay the bill. He compared the situation to going to the pub with 27 friends, participating in several rounds and then leaving without buying your round of drinks.
