Julie Girling MEP who was suspended from the Conservative Party for supporting the European Parliament’s resolution on the progress in the first four rounds of Brexit talks with the UK has issued a statement, writes Catherine Feore.

Girling says that she is disappointed that the ‘whip’ was withdrawn. The whip refers to the links between a party representative and their party. The action was taken without any discussion with the MEP.

Girling said:

“I have never considered myself a rebel and have not altered my beliefs. It is the party which has changed, not me, but that does not stop me feeling sadness that such a precipitate response was felt appropriate.”

Girling points out that she has been an active member of the party for 40 year – 20 of which were as an elected representative. She points out, as Ken Clarke MP has done, that for 39 of those year the Conservative Party was pro-European.
