Markets...a meeting place
This Saturday, 11 October, the weekly Stockel Market will host the launch of a heart-warming initiative called “Solo & Saveurs / Solo & Smaak”.
The campaign shines a light on people living alone – showing that solo living doesn’t mean missing out on the joy of fresh, local and delicious food.
On the day, many market traders will offer smaller portions specially designed for one person.
From crisp vegetables to artisan cheeses, from freshly prepared dishes to a single slice of cake – visitors can enjoy a wide range of quality products, without waste or leftovers.
Organizer Carla Dejonghe said: "In fact, many traders already do this spontaneously, adapting flexibly to their customers’ needs. This initiative celebrates their daily commitment and highlights the human warmth, care and friendliness that lie behind every stall.Because the market is for everyone – including those who shop or cook for one."
The initiative is part of the municipality’s charter to raise awareness of the experiences of people who live alone.
Above all, however, it’s an opportunity to put the spotlight on the market traders who make a difference every week – not only through the quality of their products, but also through the human connections they create.
A fruit and vegetable trader explains:“We know our customers. If someone’s cooking for one, we’re happy to cut a cabbage in half or quarters. We pack small portions with a smile – and we always take a moment for a chat. For many people, that contact is just as important as the shopping itself.”
The action also underlines the market’s role as a meeting place – a space where people still truly see and speak to one another.
Those living alone will receive a reusable tote bag with information about the initiative and a few easy, tasty recipes for one.
