online-educationThe European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education today (11 October) adopted an opinion by GUE/NGL MEP Nikolaos Chountis that will put more money into education and sports as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF).

Commenting after the vote, the Greek MEP described the funds as a vital part of the EU’s Cohesion Policy in promoting solidarity among member states:

“It’s very important that we succeeded in adopting this opinion on investing in jobs and growth in areas like education, culture and sports with strong consensus.”

He also touched upon the negative impact that a possible suspension of the funds to member states for breaking financial rules will have in the culture and education sectors:

“There are persisting high levels of youth unemployment and in several member states that remains over 40%. This underlines the importance of the ESIF to address structural and long-term unemployment, foster social inclusion and promote better and highly accessible public education for all.”

In addition, he expressed regret over the extreme fiscal adjustments and austerity still in place which have led to a decrease in public financing for education. This in turn has had an adverse impact on the migration crisis:

“This current crisis poses many challenges for the education systems in some member states and our opinion calls on the EU institutions to provide them with adequate funding via ESIF and other means that will substantially support the integration of refugees, migrants, asylum seekers into education, the European labor market and societies,” he concluded
