Lithuanian presidency: 'We did everything expected of us and even more'
“Success in the Council presidency has nothing to do with the size of a country. It has everything to do with hard work, efficiency and determination to build a consensus,” said Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė. She was in the Parliament on 14 January to debate the results of her country's EU presidency with MEPs. “We came prepared, we learned along the way, we have given it everything."
“I am proud that our small country, a young democracy, managed to prove that it can carry out the tasks of an EU presidency as well as any other member state,” said Grybauskaitė. She said the main achievements included final agreements on the EU's long-term budget and the budget for next year as well as their approval by the Parliament and progress on creating the EU's banking union. The Lithuanian president also told MEPs that the Vilnius summit held in November gave fresh impulse to the Eastern Partnership: “Ukraine will never be the same again.”
