![]() |
| On 8 October local and regional leaders from the EU will discuss the potential regional impact of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with Trade Commissioner Karel de Gucht and US Ambassador to the European Union Anthony Luzzatto Gardner. Committee of the Regions' members will also debate the EU Italian Presidency's priorities focusing on the need for greater flexibility in EU budgetary discipline to promote regional investment co-funded by EU cohesion policy. In the first political debate of the plenary session (7 October) CoR members will exchange views with Sandro Gozi, Italy's Secretary of State for European Affairs, who will present the commitment of the Italian Presidency to promote growth-enhancing investments. On 8 October the implication for local and regional authorities of the TTIP negotiations will be examined in a debate with Commissioner de Gucht and Ambassador Gardner.
The plenary will host the opening of the OPEN DAYS 2014 – 12th European Week of Regions and Cities on 6 October. This year’s event will gather 6,000 representatives from regions and cities to exchange views on how best to launch the 2014-2020 EU Cohesion Policy at a time when economic disparity in Europe is once again on the rise. Cleaner air for Europe Though there have been improvements in air quality in the EU, 400,000 citizens die prematurely each year from air pollution which is why the European Commission has proposed updating its policy. Cor Lamers (EPP/NL), Mayor of Schiedam, will present his draft opinion on the proposals arguing that there is still a mismatch between policies and the timeframe. He wants national emission reduction commitments for 2030 to be unchanged and 2025 interim targets to be binding. Binding 2030 climate and energy goals needed to tackle climate change Climate change will also be debated as Annabelle Jaeger (PES/FR), member of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Regional Council, presents her report on climate change ahead of the UN Climate Conference in Paris next year. The rapporteur calls on the EU to show more ambition and agree "a winning trio of binding climate and energy goals for 2030". The EU should use this as a spring board to become net emission neutral by midway through the 21st century. The opening session of the plenary will be held on 6 October in Brussels in the European Parliament (PHS building, hemicycle). The plenary debates on 7-8 October will be held in the Charlemagne Building. Debates will be streamed live here.
