European Parliament this week: EU budget, novel food and Sakharov Prize

thumbsupThis week in Parliament, the Budgets committee members vote their amendments to next year's EU budget. The nominees for the Sakharov Prize are to be officially presented by the members sponsoring them, and Parliament's political groups are set to prepare for the plenary session to be held in Strasbourg this 5-8 October.

From Monday (28 September) to Wednesday, members of Parliament's Budgets Committee vote on their amendments to the draft 2016 EU budget. In a resolution adopted in July, Parliament outlined its priorities, from devoting more resources to the refugee crisis to restoring cuts to the research and innovation programme Horizon 2020.

On Monday, Deputy Speaker of Saudi Arabia’s Consultative Assembly Mohammed bin Amin Al-Jefri, is in AFET to discuss with MEPs the situation in his region. Human rights issues and use of the death penalty are likely to be raised by members.

On the same day, the six nominees for Parliament's 2015 Sakharov Prize are to be officially presented by the political groups at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Development committees and the Human Rights subcommittee. The prize is awarded every year by the EP to honour human rights defenders.

The political groups prepare for next week's plenary, which will see King Felipe of Spain, French President François Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel address MEPs.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, a seminar for journalists on novel food is organised with the participation of MEPs, civil society representatives and experts.
