Demonstration against TTIP hits Brussels
The D19-20 Alliance, composed of representatives of farmers, CSC and FGTB trade unionists and representatives of more than 60 organizations from the voluntary sector, have led extensive action at the heart of the European quarter in Brussels, on the margins of the European Council on Thursday and Friday (15-16 October).
The Alliance stated: "The European Commission's objective is to ratify the CETA (free trade agreement with Canada) and conclude the negotiations on the TTIP (Transatlantic trade and investment partnership) by the end of the year. The opposition of the peoples of Europe to these treaties has never been stronger, in a true democracy, against the destruction of our rights by austerity and free-trade agreements!"
Against TTIP and austerity
A similar event on Monday (12 October) received support from four milk-producer unions: European Milk Board (EMB), Milcherzeuger Interessengemeinschaft (MIG), Jeunesses Agricultural Belgians (JAB) and the Flemish Milk Board (FMB). They announced in a joint statement the "organization of columns of tractors, trucks, cars to encircle the summit".
"If we do not move in numbers, the infernal machine that is TTIP, started with lobbying and with the complicity of the political world will slowly crush us," said the four organizations.
Thursday also marked the arrival in Brussels of the European Marches against austerity and TTIP, organized by European associations and union activists.
