Jill_Evans_webCommenting on today's (2 February) developments in the renegotiation of the UK's relationship with the EU, Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans (pictured) said: "The people of Wales have the right to determine their own future."

She added: "That means that if Wales votes to remain in the EU, we should not be dragged out against our will if other parts of the UK vote to leave. The UK should only have a mandate to leave the EU if all of its constituent parts vote to do so. The Welsh government should have a 'red card' on Brexit. It should be unthinkable for the UK to leave the EU without Welsh consent."

Evans concluded her statement saying: "Wales has benefitted enormously from being part of the European Union, and the EU has benefitted greatly from having Wales as a member. We would like to see reforms that not only make the EU more open, accountable and effective, but also give Wales a stronger direct voice in Brussels. We are far better off arguing for real change from within than shouting from the sidelines. And to do that, Wales needs a Plaid Cymru government."
