#SocialPackage: First outline of the European Pillar of Social Rights and reform of the Posting of Workers Directive
The EU Commission has presented its new social package including the first outline of the European Pillar of Social Rights and reform of the Posting of Workers Directive.
Following the commitment President Juncker made in his State of the Union speech on 9 September 2015, and following the first orientation debate held by the College on 27 January 2016, today Commissioner Marianne Thyssen presented the preliminary outline of the European Pillar of Social Rights to the College, as well as the details of the public consultation on the same subject which will be launched today. The College also adopted today the proposal for a targeted revision of the 1996 Posting of Workers Directive.
Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis, said: "Europe is still facing problems resulting from the financial and sovereign debt crisis: poverty, social exclusion, inequality and high unemployment. At the same time, we need to update the social agenda and our social acquis in the light of economic and social trends of 21st century. This is a complex task and a broad consultation process is needed to guarantee that all views are taken into account. The Pillar of Social Rights is part of our work to strengthen Economic and Monetary Union and is envisaged for the euro area. However, we will make sure that non-euro member states are fully involved in the consultation process and can join the initiative if they wish to do so."
Thyssen, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, said: “The biggest challenge of the 21st century is the changing world of work. Globalization, the digital revolution and new business models have an unprecedented impact on how we work. We need to be ready to anticipate and influence these trends and developments. With the consultation that we are launching today, we are setting the first step towards a European Pillar of Social Rights. I have also said from day one of my mandate that we need to facilitate labour mobility, but that it needs to happen in a fair way. Today's proposal will create a legal framework for posting that is clear, fair and easy to enforce."
