Berlin hosts #StartUpEurope event to showcase innovation
Germany’s capital will this week play host to a gathering focusing on ‘Start-up Europe’ – looking at inspiring entrepreneurs, start-ups and innovations, writes Tony Mallett in Berlin.
Taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday (22-23 November) at the Climate-KIC Co-location Centre, the cutting-edge gathering comes under the banner of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). KICs are Knowledge and Innovation Communities. The agenda for the two-day event includes presentations from entrepreneurs, a visit to the Climate-KIC innovation hub and panel discussions.
The idea is to demonstrate how the EIT Community, with a special focus on EIT and Climate-KIC, boosts innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe, the support both offer to start-ups and the results merging from this support.
The event aims to give a broader European perspective by showing diverse examples of start-ups from across the continent. There are two side events attached to the programme, including one on the UN climate change talks. Among the start-ups being showcased at the event will be: Germany’s Green City Solutions; Agromet (Italy); three companies, Pendula, PlugSurfing and Coolar (also from Germany); XT PL (Poland); ClimateRe (Switzerland); Sympower (Estonia); Giunko (Italy), MASH (Nordics) and GrowUp Urban Farms (from the UK). EIT is an independent EU body set up in 2008 which aims to “enhance Europe’s ability to innovate by nurturing entrepreneurial talent and supporting new ideas”.
The Budapest-based institute hails as its mission contributing to the competitiveness of Europe, its sustainable economic growth and job creation by promoting and strengthening synergies and cooperation among businesses, education institutions and research organizations.
EIT also aims to create favourable environments for creative thought, to enable world-class innovation and entrepreneurship to thrive in Europe.
It seeks to boost innovation through integration and says that action is needed to overcome the fragmented European innovation landscape. The institute brings together the ‘knowledge triangle’ of business, education and research to form dynamic cross-border partnerships; those Knowledge and Innovation Communities. These KICs develop innovative products and services, start new companies and aim to train a new generation of entrepreneurs. EU Reporter will be attending the event in Berlin and will follow-up with more news this week.
