Jo Leinen: #Brexit extension could jeopardize European elections

"Extending the Brexit negotiations beyond 23 May would jeopardize the legitimacy of the European elections and the constitution of the new European Parliament. Because of a lengthy three step ratification procedure in the UK, the summit of heads of state and government on 21 and 22 March is the last opportunity to find a final agreement between Brussels and London, and the withdrawal agreement can enter into force before the European elections. Under British law, both chambers of parliament have 21 days to oppose the ratification of an international agreement," said MEP Jo Leinen (pictured), S&D-spokesperson on the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (AFCO).
"Under EU law, all member states are obliged to participate in the European elections. This obligation also applies, if a member state intends to leave the Union," said Leinen.
"If the Brexit deadline is extended, but the United Kingdom does not participate in the elections, lawsuits are likely to be successful and there is a risk that the European Parliament will not be able to constitute itself, thereby paralyzing the European Union."
