EU signs Trade and Co-operation Agreement with the UK
This morning (30 December) European Council President Charles Michel, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen formally signed the Trade and Co-operation Agreement between the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community, of the one part, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on the other part.
The treaties will now be sent to London to be signed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, then returned to Brussels, to be placed in the EU Council’s archives.
Provisional agreement to apply to March
In a separate statement, the EU has already indicated that they may need to already extend the period of provisional application. The European Parliament have indicated that they might only be able to give their approval in March, after the 28 February deadline set in the Treaty. The Council add that additional legal/linguistic revision of the texts might also be needed.
The presidents also signed the Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning security procedures for exchanging and protecting classified information and the Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the European Atomic Energy Community for Co-operation on the Safe and Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy.
