Work proceeds on Ukraine's power supply, Zelenskiy says
After Russian attacks on Ukraine, emergency crews worked to alleviate power shortages in many areas of the country, notably Odesa Black Sea port, President Volodymyr Zeleskiy said on Sunday (11 December).
Zelenskiy stated in his nightly video address that it was possible to partially restore supplies in Odesa, as well as other districts and cities in the region.
"We will do everything possible to reach as many people as possible under the circumstances that have developed following the Russian strikes."
Russian forces used Iranian-made drones on Saturday to strike two Odesa energy plants. This knocked out power to approximately 1.5 million customers.
Zelenskiy stated that Odesa was "among those regions with the most frequent power interruptions".
Other areas that experienced "very difficult" power supply conditions included the capital Kyiv, Kyiv region, and four regions of western Ukraine.
Zelenskiy stated that the work to restore electricity to the general population was ongoing.
Russia has been attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure since October with large-scale missile and drone strikes.
In February, Russian forces invaded Ukraine as part of Moscow's "special military operation" in order to eliminate a threat to its security. Russia is being accused by Ukraine and its allies of an unprovoked invasion to seize territory from its prowestern neighbour.
