Will sweepstakes casinos ever reach the EU?
Online gambling has been an ever-growing space since its introduction to the US, but in the last few years it has truly taken the nation by storm, providing opportunities and a unique alternative to traditional gambling that is more accessible and continuously developing. Within this, sweepstakes casinos have likewise provided an alternative to the traditional online gambling options. These platforms have grown in popularity thanks to their accessibility, highly innovative model and legal workaround that lets users play games and win real prizes without placing real-money bets (at least in the conventional sense!). But with this massive and rolling growth across the US of A, one question looms large for its neighbors across the pond: Will sweepstakes casinos ever reach the European Union?
Now, Europe is as hooked by the iGaming world as the US, with a well-established online gambling industry that is (arguably, of course) the most mature and diverse across the globe. The introduction of sweepstakes-style casinos into the EU could pose both opportunities and challenges, the latter referring to regulatory issues that would arise from their establishment on the continent. What is important to take into account is the nuances of the sweepstakes-style online casino model, how and why it is flourishing in the US, and what would be needed for the same model to gain that all-important traction abroad.
The rise of sweepstakes casinos
Gambling laws in the US vary to a great extent, state by state. Within this, sweepstakes casinos give players and customers alike a clever workaround to strict regulatory frameworks, whereby the platforms allow players to get involved with casino-style games using virtual currencies (think of Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins) that give the advantage of seemingly reducing risk. This is because these kinds of virtual currencies, that players can win and redeem for real cash prizes, means they are not technically “gambling”, though it is of course within the same realm of cash gambling and can veer in that direction through advertising and guiding players.
A key driver for popularity in this sweepstakes online casino model is the emergence of branded sweepstakes platforms that have crafted sleek, user-friendly environments, resembling the experience of top-tier online casinos. Platforms such as WSN give players substantial transparency and high social engagement, providing players a legal and enjoyable option for those in states where real-money online gambling remains restricted.
Europe’s online gambling landscape
The EU is familiar with online gambling. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, Netherland, and Malta (to name but a significant few) operate sophisticated legal frameworks that regulate all aspects from the online sportsbook realm to digital slots and classic online casino games. The difference between the EU and the US? The EU member states have their national policies in place; these either regulate or license real cash money gambling activities directly, and because of this, the entire concept of sweepstakes casinos (that of fake digital currency) might appear unnecessary in many parts of the continent. Just think about it – why bother with this kind of model that deals in a workaround for players, when players can just access regulated online gambling platforms? But that is only one side of things. The online sweepstakes casino model could also offer benefits that go above and soar beyond legalities, like growing accessibility, or tapping into a younger audience and expanding brand engagement in demographics (for example, religious groups) that traditionally oppose any gambling-related activity.
Technological advancements in the industry
Tech is always a big one to discuss! This is one aspect that will most probably push the online sweepstakes casinos model to make its tremendous leap across the ocean. Ongoing tech innovation in the iGaming space, like improvised access for mobile-based apps, blockchain-based validation tools, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven personalization for each and every player, and AI chatbot helpers, are all molding what players can expect from the iGaming space. It is obvious that iGaming is a continually evolving landscape, and it’s not too fantastic to perceive a future where the sweepstakes casino model emerges as a popular and ingrained option in Europe’s online gambling scene – but it will have to be designed from the ground up and fully comply with EU regulations, as well as appeal to the different local gaming preferences. A blend of social gaming, reward systems and real world prizes with full transparency (the latter being most important!) is needed for the model to settle on the continent.
Potential regulatory barriers
It is worth mentioning that introducing and incorporating online sweepstakes casinos in the EU would come with its own host of complications and challenges. EU gambling regulators are vigilant when it comes to player and customer protection, the ever-important anti-money laundering (AML) efforts, responsible iGaming and other protective regulations, all for good reason! As such, platforms operating in the iGaming sphere, and any future sweepstakes casinos platforms, would need to be transparent about how their systems actually work, and agree and adhere to data protection laws (the General Data Protection Regulation - GDPR - comes to mind here).
